GI Map Beta Glucuronidase

GI Map – Beta Glucuronidase marker

This one, simple marker on the GI Map Gut Test gives us considerable insight and several angles of possible support. They are all interesting, but at the Functional Health Clinic we find the most useful of these is how to target Gut Detoxification.

Beta Glucuronidase is a marker of an enzyme that helps to break down complex carbohydrates, so it is possible that some food choices are proving stressful for the digestive system here. Additionally, it can be a marker of toxic load in the gut.

Glucuronidation is a process involving toxins, carcinogens, hormones, and drugs in the liver to help excretion and elimination out of the body. High levels of the enzyme Beta Glucuronidase can ‘deconjugate’ these molecules. Too much deconjugation in the gut and they can be reabsorbed via enterohepatic recirculation, into the blood, causing higher than desired levels of toxins and potentially harmful compounds.

Dysbiosis of the Microbiome is a consideration too. Research shows that the β-glucuronidase enzyme is produced by 94 – 96% of E. coli strains, which is an important marker of the link between the infection, the toxic effect on the gut and body and the chronic health challenges.
