Functional Health Seminar

We’ve now run the two Functional Health Seminar groups of Newcastle University 4th Year Medical Students at the clinic.

Two great groups discussing and learning about the Functional Health Approach.

Well…. my approach to it anyway!

And how it can be applied alongside other approaches like Medical interventions. I always ask the students what does ‘functional’ mean to them in terms of the medical/allopathic world and remit.

The answer given being that something is termed ‘functional’ if it doesn’t fit any other diagnostic and named condition.

I appreciate this definition given the model. In fact I had a similar definition after studying two degrees – But now, I’d certainly see it in a different light.

Right back to the human function fundamentals that exist way before anybody has created a therapy, strategy, treatment, diet, supplement, medication, curriculum, qualification, credential, organisation etc.

During the Functional Health Seminar we covered:
– Their training and career direction and goals.
– Principles of the Functional Health Approach.
– Integrating Functional with other Methods eg Allopathic.
– Modalities used here at the Functional Health Clinic.
– The importance of a Balance of Information.
– Education as part of the client/patient process.
– Troubleshooting solutions to their own health challenges.

I got some great insight too. Its always valuable to see the inner workings of different models/systems/institutions/curriculums/philosophies.

We also took some extra time to consider the inherent balance to each and every approach, therapy, modality, specialist etc.

Whether that be our own, or another’s.

Can we effectively identify the role and remit by comprehensively appreciating the advantages/disadvantages, value/limitation, benefit/drawback, pro/con etc of the option available to us?

That goes for practitioners, students and patients.

A Fascinating Seminar!
